I’m incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to make a career out of two things I love, Video Games and Writing. It is generally a fulfilling pursuit, although at times it has caused me oodles of stress. The only problem is that doing it recontextualised both video games and writing for me as a leisurely pursuit.
I’m far from the first person to come to the realisation that turning your hobby(ies) into a career can be detrimental to both, of course. But it’s an interesting conundrum all the same, because we often turn to hobbies when we are distressed as a form of escape—where do you turn when your hobbies are what are causing you stress?
For me the answer lies in compartmentalisation. For a long time I would designate a game as something I did solely for fun. Usually a multiplayer shooter, I wouldn’t actively pitch stories about these games (although sometimes I was approached to write about them anyway). But I’ve struggled to find a way to do the same with writing. Maybe it’s harder to recontextualise it, or maybe I just look at writing as more of a chore than playing video games. Either way, I found if I wasn’t writing with a career-focused purpose, I wasn’t writing at all.
I have, however, found an outlet for that sort of work. Reddit’s WritingPrompts subreddit is a community of people who take single sentence prompts and then weave them into short stories. Inspiration comes from all kinds of places, but it’s nice when it can so regularly come from one place.
With that in mind, I decided to try my hand at it doing some Writing Prompts. And because you are, I assume, here to read my writing*, I decided to share the output here.
Upfront, I’d like to point out that the essence of this writing is to first draft something. To write a story on the fly for the fun of it. It’s not carefully edited or meticulously crafted. Consideration has gone into these stories, but not the same amount I put into my professional writing. There might be errors, there might be missed opportunities, and they almost always hinge on some sort of wordplay, gag or obscure reference, but I did them primarily for my own amusement. To find the hobby in writing again.
If you’re interested in reading them, I’ve made a new page for “Prompts” to categorise them somewhere. And I’ll link the first couple below.
Writing update – we’re 20% of the way through the edit of Till The Heavens Burst now. It’s moving along at a cracking pace now. I know I’ve previously said I can’t do percentage estimates, and that continues to be true, so take the number above with a grain of salt.
The project after that has stalled a little as the editing process has been a bit more involved than I’d anticipated. Once I get a good system going there, it will continue reinvigorated.
Reading-wise I’m still going with Dan Simmons’ The Terror. I knew it was a big fella when I got it, but it’s been a bigger read than I anticipated. Great though.
If you’re interested in the games I’ve been playing, your best bet is to check out The GAPodcast. Anyway, see you next month!
